Meghan Crandall

Born in 1971 in Seattle, WA, Meghan Starr Crandall studied Graphic Design, Photography and Fine Art at Central Washington University, earning a BFA in Graphic Design. She currently lives in Seattle, WA and is the co-owner of Kick Spark Creative. Photography and design have been at the center of her practice for more than 25 years. In recent years, she has branched out to explore mixed media and painting, and has participated in seven intensive art retreats at JTHAR in Joshua Tree, CA. At these yearly retreats she spends several weeks taking photographs and creating art in the high desert. In the spaces between, she can be found hiking in the nearby hills, kayaking or venturing to destinations further afield.

Wherever my wanderlust takes me, I'm always on the lookout for odd and unnoticed flora and flotsam to compose with. I’m drawn to how the simple pieces we can find on a daily walk tell stories about our culture and environment. Discarded human-made objects encroaching and inevitably integrating with the graceful creations of nature. During the Pandemic, I shifted my focus to botanical details and transformations in my own backyard, creating a series of assemblage photographs that is especially reflective of the changing seasons. I craft each background in a variety of mediums, often with hand-painted canvas or fabric cyanotypes. My hope is that these ephemeral compositions will encourage people to appreciate the power of nature, slow down and notice the little things, and contemplate the enormous importance of maintaining balance in all areas of life.

My art story began when I was a young girl and wanted to color in coloring books, having a hard time staying in the lines. When I realized I didn’t necessarily need to stay within the lines and it was okay to exaggerate or minimize shapes, that gave me the capacity to explore stretching lines and colors and see what happens. I discovered it is okay to carry lines off a page, to use colors that are not ‘typical’ such as a blue sun, purple pears, orange mountains. From there I just kept going and what you see is a result of my coloring book journey. I like to paint on panel board or canvas using oil pastel, acrylic or oil paint.

My work reflects how I am seeing and feeling the world. I like to create art that conveys fun energy and movement woven with playfulness. There is a swirl and flow to life, and I try to capture both of these movements with lines, shapes, textures and colors that unite and interest the observer. I currently paint on panel board or canvas using oil pastel, acrylic or oil paint. I find a lot of inspiration from observing my garden and traveling.
